the buddha's foot
the koan of the buddha stepping on a bug has lodged itself in my awareness like a thorn. it points to the irreconcilable tension between the aspiration to harmlessness and the inescapable reality of causing harm simply by being embodied in an interdependent world. even the most mindful foot still sometimes meets the soft body of a being underfoot.
contemplating this, i feel a deep humility and tenderness. it's an invitation to hold the impossibility of perfect non-harming alongside a renewed commitment to ahimsa in the face of that impossibility. to step ever more lightly and carefully through this aching world, knowing that even the most awakened being leaves some trail of unintended harm, and that this is the poignant price of being here at all.
